Midfielder training drills

Midfielders play the game twice: once before the ball arrives, once after. Scanning frequency, body shape on receipt and the ability to play forwards under contact are what separate a midfielder who controls a game from one who just touches the ball a lot.

Train scanning and half-turn receiving in every rondo, build passing range with both feet, and back it with the aerobic base that lets you keep making the same decisions in the last twenty minutes.

Common questions

How do midfielders improve scanning?
Add a constraint that forces it — a coloured bib or number called behind you that you must report before receiving. Scanning frequency responds fast to that kind of constraint.
What is the most important midfield skill?
Receiving on the half turn. It turns a backwards pass into a forwards one and is the single habit that most changes how a midfielder is scouted.
