Tactical football drills

Tactical training is what turns a good technician into a good footballer. Scanning before you receive, recognising a pressing trigger, holding the width until the moment it is worth breaking it — these are trainable, and they are the first thing academy coaches look for.

The drills below use animated pitch diagrams so you can see the shape and the movement before you set anything up. Most work in small groups; several can be rehearsed alone by walking the pattern and calling the decision out loud.

Common questions

Can tactical drills be trained without a full team?
Yes. Scanning, body-shape and decision drills work in twos and threes, and the pitch diagrams let you rehearse the pattern mentally before a session. Small-sided versions of most patterns keep the decision intact.
At what age should tactical work start?
Basic scanning and body shape can be introduced early. Structured pressing and positional discipline usually land better in the mid-teens onwards, once players can hold a picture of the whole pitch.

Want this built into a weekly plan?

KICKPATH turns these drills into a seven-day training and nutrition plan around your position and schedule, and the AI coach adjusts it as you log sessions. Accounts are for players aged 16 and over; parents, guardians and coaches are welcome to use the guidance with the young players they support.
